2022 IACCP Culture and Psychology Summer School online version

Overview

The Culture & Psychology (C&P) School, sponsored by the International Association for Cross-Cultural Psychology (IACCP), is open to students at PhD and MSc level who are interested in culture and psychology. The C&P School provides a research-intensive and interactive experience for participants from various universities to learn from one another and to receive specialized training from experts in
different fields that incorporate culture in their study of psychology. The C&P School precedes 26th International Congress of the International Association for Cross-Cultural Psychology (Online)
July 12th – 16th, 2022.
The C&P School focuses on community engaged scholarship and supports the development of broad research skills, international collaborations, effective grant proposal writing, and preparation of scholarly manuscripts. Our goal is to stimulate networking and interactions with peers and instructors in a safe and productive environment. We also aim to emphasize the importance of the applied character of research and necessity of interdisciplinary collaboration.

The program

STREAM 1 (Hybrid Stream)- Cultural-Clinical Psychology

The instructors will use lecture, hand-on activities and discussion. We will capitalize on having two instructors and will model debates in the field for our students, questioning each other and helping students do the same. We will also have virtual visits with leading figures in the field. This workshop will cover cultural similarities and differences in prevalence and presentation of mental illness: Present evidence from cultural psychology with relevance to the study of mental illness: Models of the self, emotions, cognition, social relationships, interoception. Discuss research methods in cultural-clinical psychology like culturally-sensitive methods in assessment and treatment, approaches to capturing cultural scripts of mental illness.

STREAM 2 (Online) - Applying Thematic Analysis to Cultural Psychological Research

In this workshop, students will be asked to bring qualitative data that they have collected for one of their own research projects. We will read and discuss Braun and Clarke’s (2006) classic article, Using Thematic Analysis in Psychology. After this foundational discussion, students will develop a coding scheme for their data and work to code their data. They will then work in pairs to achieve reliability in each partner’s data coding. After this, with time remaining, students will begin to draft a findings/results section for a publishable manuscript based on their data coding. Students who wish to participate in the workshop but who do not have their own data to analyze will be paired with a student who have data; in this way, even students without data will gain important experience in qualitative analysis.

STREAM 4 (Online): Stream 4 - Organizational Psychology from a Cross-Cultural
Perspective

The purpose of this workshop stream is to familiarize students with a selection of some of the most prominent topics, theories and empirical studies in organizational psychology as well as to introduce students to how organizational psychological research is conducted. The course will cover a broad range of topics, including, but not limited to power, status, leadership, motivation, and teams. This stream will introduce students to current research and how to apply it to the real world. The module is meant to be flexibly based on interests. Students should leave with a general knowledge of organizational psychology, but with a deeper knowledge of at least one topic that particularly interests them. This stream aims to involve students in a wide cross section of organizational psychological literature. It will also introduce students to current research and methods. Note: You will be also encouraged to do some preparatory work before the course. The stream
leaders will provide reading lists and specific tasks for you to realize before C&P School.

Application
To apply, you will need to submit (a) a (maximum 250-word) cover letter of intent that explains why you wish to join the C&P School, and (b) your current curriculum vitae. These documents will need to be submitted with a completed online application no later than May 15th, 2022. A decision letter will be emailed by May 30th, 2022. Accepted applicants must pay a registration fee and agree to join the IACCP conference. Online registration and payment must be made by June 20th, 2022.

Costs
There are two categories of registration. The first category is for those students who only attend online streams. The second category is for those students who attend in-person streams. Note that students who are interested in taking both in-person streams and online streams should pay for the in-person streams category. Students are able to choose two or three content streams.

1. Online Streams ONLY (available for Streams 1, 2, and 4 only):
A) USD $90 for student members from high income countries
B) USD $70 for student members from low- to mid- income countries.

Attendees who are not members of IACCP will add $50.

Accommodation & Logistics
The in-person sessions for Streams 1 and 3 will take place at the University of Gdansk in Poland. Accommodations, breakfast, and lunch are covered by the registration fee.
